Redesign

In 2022 our team decided to move our main focus from revenue to the first look and user retention improvement. One of the many tools we adopted was a global redesign of the product, and design system implementation through either design or code.

As a Product Designer, I was involved in user research, developing user flows, and iterating on the new design through A/B testing to enhance our product from the business and user’s perspective.

Chat redesign

Why?

Throughout the quantitive analysis, we learned that communication between users influences how and whether they return to our product. We’ve raised the question of how to make chatting in the app smooth and effortless for them.

The definition of success here was a percentage of attempts to send a message to other users.

Chats before redesign

How?

We've looked at our discovery process from various angles. First, we checked our metrics and user feedback from the AppStore and PlayMarket to see how users interact and what problems they have. Second, we analyzed other dating apps to see how they handle similar issues.

What was next?

We found out that users don’t get enough replies because their matches are often offline for long periods of time.

Additionally, we noticed that not having enough information about a user makes others less likely to respond to their messages.

We used a framework called the "Opportunity Solution Tree" to gather all our findings and connect them to the desired outcomes and the key metrics we focus on. This framework helped us organize our insights ensuring that we align our actions with our goals and objectives.

Solution

We made significant UI improvements and introduced new features to enhance the overall user experience. The following changes were particularly effective:

  • We added more obvious online markers with text explaining the user’s activity status, such as “active now” or “active today.”

  • We introduces a separate list of online users indicating those online and ready to chat at this moment

  • To draw users' attention and make them focus on a specific conversation, we enhanced the avatar size in both the chat list ant thread

  • We made specific badges showing where the user's reaction is necessary

  • Refined empty states now provide users with more information about each other and suggest some topics to start a conversation with.
